Every three months, we release a progress update that outlines the work we have been doing to progress the Commission of Inquiry recommendations and keep children and young people safe.
Our latest progress report, released today, sets out the work that happened between 1 February 2025 and 30 April 2025.
Since our last progress update, we have completed 8 recommendations: 7 from phase 2 and 1 from phase 1. These recommendations include:
- Releasing a user-friendly guide for the public that makes it clear what the role of the Commission for Children and Young People, the Registrar of the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Scheme, the Integrity Commission and the Ombudsman is, and who to make a complaint to (recommendation 18.14).
- Forming a Victim-Survivor Advisory Group to give adults who have experienced abuse an opportunity to help shape policy (recommendation 19.5).
- Changing the Tasmania Police website and Police Family Violence Review Committee to make clearer, more accessible processes for reporting and responding to allegations of child sexual abuse involving Tasmania Police (recommendation 16.7).
- Training our staff about trauma to better support victim-survivors who may connect with our institutions (recommendations 17.6 and 16.16).
- Providing funding to increase the support given to victim-survivors (recommendation 21.5).
Government agencies are continuing to take action to progress recommendations and keep children safe. Some of the steps taken over the last quarter include:
- Changes to the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Scheme to strengthen rules for workers, volunteers and organisations who work with vulnerable people, including children and young people.
- Expanding the Witness Intermediaries Panel to give extra support to witnesses in child sexual abuse cases who have difficulty communicating.
- Engaging with the Tasmanian community to talk about child safety at Agfest.
- Supporting discussions of child sexual abuse between victim-survivors, service providers, researchers, community leaders, and policymakers from across Australia at Courageous Conversations.
The full progress update can be read on both the 'What the Tasmanian Government is doing' page and the ‘Recommendation status’ page, where the status of all recommendations can be found.
