Phase one progress report released

The first milestone progress report on implementation of recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings has released today.

The Progress Report, Immediate Change, outlines the actions by Tasmanian Government agencies to implement the 48 recommendations identified by the Commission for response in phase one of the response, by 1 July 2024.

Some of the actions implemented in phase one include:

  • establishing a new Safeguarding in Schools Unit within the Department for Education, Children and Young People with a dedicated focus on safeguarding children and young people in education contexts
  • enhancing Department of Health safeguarding measures, including developing new resources on child safeguarding and complaints.
  • introducing laws to improve criminal justice processes, strengthen risk assessment processes for Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Checks and provide greater protection and support for complainants in child sexual abuse trials.
