The draft Commission for Children and Young People Bill 2024 is currently out for public submissions. The bill will set up a new independent oversight body with new statutory roles, including:
- Commissioner for Children and Young People
- Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, and
- Child Advocate
It is proposed that the Commission will bring together the existing functions of the current Commissioner for Children and Young People and the Independent Regulator of the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Framework.
The draft Bill sets up the Commission as independent from Government. The Commission will be separately and directly funded, with the power to control its own budget and staffing.
Public feedback is open for 12 weeks and will close on 15 December 2024.
Find out more about the draft bill on the Department of Justice website. Child-friendly material will be created and uploaded to this website during the consultation period.
